Equipment List for the First Session

Hello everyone! This post outlines the stuff needed to bring for the first week of Powder Horn. The list is broken down into what to two sections: the entire list, and the list per activity. Some of the items (tooth paste/brush) have self explanatory activities, so don't let the lack of "Crew Tooth Brushing" prevent anyone from participating in proper oral hygiene.

Here it is:

  • Backpack - internal or external frame
  • Tent (one or two man) backpacking and ground cloth (you will be sleeping outdoors)
  • Sleeping Bag suitable for one person
  • Form Pad
  • Rain Gear
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Towel, washcloth, and soap
  • 2 small flashlights with extra batteries
  • Aqua shoes, tennis shoes, sandals or moccasins
  • Heavy socks and poly sock liners
  • Swimsuit and large towel
  • Clothing for 3 Days (please layer and prepare for rain and wind)
  • Knife, fork, and spoon (cup and plate will be provided). Meals will be prepared and served by the cook crew
  • Suntan lotion
  • Sun Glasses
  • Hat or Cap
  • Water jug or canteen
  • Folding Camp Chair
  • Paper and pen/pencils for notes
  • Small backpack or fanny pack
  • Personal First Aid kit
  • Compass
  • Mountain Bike and Helmet (notify us if you don't have access to a bike)
Optional Items:

  • Personal climbing gear i.e. harness, helmet, figure eight, locking D caribiners, ATC, and gloves
  • Songbook and/or musical instrument
  • Scriptures
  • Camera
  • Pillow
  • Personal Snacks
  • GPS
  • Ranger Guidebook, No 3128
  • Star Charts

Here is a breakdown on how those items may be used during the first weekend:

Thursday 16th Check in Copy of Class 3 Physical, course fees if not already paid Will be located behind the museum, watch for signs and staff to direct you


Will drop off camping gear at check in - will have time later to set up camp Mt Bike or hybrid for travel to and from camp to classroom recommended but not required


Camping gear - 10 essentials/first aid kit- Camp site is primitive there will be porta potty and short walk to shower house

Low COPE Comfortable Shoes Forecast is 72 and partly sunny. May need jacket since will be doing this at 9 am

Rock Climbing Firm, well fitting or climbing shoes Portable Wall
Watercraft Swim suit, water shoes, shorts change of dry clothes Should be done by about 5pm on your own for dinner
